A few months ago I wrote about how there is nothing distinct about mobile phone designs.
They’re all rectangular flat boxes and have been since touchscreens became common.
So what can designers do to make phones stand out? Here is one answer – let it be foldable! The Samsung Galaxy X, billed as the world’s first foldable phone, was announced late last year and is expected to be available late February. That’s what I’m talking about!
It may not be for everyone, some will even mock it for being a Motorola RAZR redux.
But I say that producing the first new, distinct design in over a decade for a device so central to modern life is about damn time. There is even an expected “arms race” for foldable phones in 2019 with other manufacturers rumored to be in development. Let’s hope it doesn’t mean that designers stop dreaming and become complacent with folding designs. Let’s go for a circular phone, why not?
What would you like to see with phone designs?
